Labor Day weekend is upon us once again.  In celebration, we are sharing this 1903 illustration by cartoonist Clifford Berryman showing Uncle Sam and teddy bear bowing in honor of American laborers.

This illustration first appeared in in the Washington Post in 1903. The American laborer is portrayed standing proud with a cigar, as the nation salutes.  Of course, in 1903 the President was Theodore “Teddy” Roosevelt.  In the image a teddy bear is symbolically standing next to Uncle Sam.
